TEASER

FADE IN:

1INT. QUARK'S - DEEP SPACE 1

Bashir sits at the bar. He's got a drink and Quark is chiding him. Mid-sentence--

QUARK
--now, now, Doctor. You have it made on
Deep Space Nine. Now, I spent eight years
on a freighter in the Ferengi Merchant Fleet.
I got terrible wages, terrible food, and you
should have seen the uniform. It was orange
and brown, with no collar and no style
whatsoever.

BASHIR
If it was all so terrible, Quark, then why did
you serve eight years?

QUARK
It was the only way to get out of my father's
house. I figured I could always jump ship if
I found a good opportunity.
(a beat)
That's how I wound up on Terok Nor... that
is before it became Deep Space Nine.

BASHIR
Now that's what I wonder, Quark... What
on Earth would you see on this dark,
cramped, dirty Cardassian station that would
make you think, now here's a good spot to
rake latinum hand over fist ? That just
makes no sense at all.

QUARK
The decision made a lot more sense after a
few bottles of Kenar and several losing hands
of Dabo.

He smiles at Bashir, then moves off to serve a patron, as Bashir shakes his head
and chuckles.

2INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR 2

Odo runs a SCANNER across a power conduit, as O'Brien is working on a
junction in the corridor.

ODO
(from scanner)
There don't appear to be any more
fluctuations, Chief.

O'BRIEN
Good. I'm tired of tracking down
overloaded rerouting circuits. You'd think
something on this station would operate
normally for a few months without breaking
down.

ODO
(agreeing)
It has been a tedious day, but I'm gratified to
have the rerouting problem repaired prior to
the Potemkin's arrival.

Odo heads back toward O'Brien.

O'BRIEN
Yeah, no kidding.

KIRA COMM VOICE
Ops to Security Chief.

ODO
(to commbadge)
Odo here, go ahead, Major.

KIRA COMM VOICE
Odo, the monitors by cargo bay twelve
appear to have shorted out. Are you still
with the chief?

ODO
Affirmative, Major.
(turns to O'Brien)
It looks as if our work isn't finished for the
evening, chief.

O'BRIEN
(to commbadge)
I heard you, Major. We'll get right on it.

KIRA COMM VOICE
Acknowledged. Kira out.

3INT. DOCKING RING BY AIRLOCK 3

Close on flickering panel, just past the airlock, with sparks flying out of it as
O'Brien and Odo approach.

4NEW ANGLE4

Pull back as O'Brien hurries past airlock and suddenly--

5C.U. OF O'BRIEN 5
As phazer fire hits him in the side, knocking him unconscious.

6ANGLE ON DOCKING RING AIRLOCK 6

As "Smiley" O'Brien steps out from the airlock, holding Odo at bay with a
PHAZER. About to kneel by O'Brien, Odo freezes instead and demands--

ODO
Who are you? What's the meaning of this?

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
No alarm, constable, or that O'Brien dies.
The airlock will short out in a minute. It'll
cause a power surge that he--
(indicates O'Brien)
--will think knocked him out. Shorting out
the rerouting mules to the monitors was a
nuisance, but I'm grateful for the monitors
since they helped bring you both to me.

ODO
You were responsible for the rerouting
problems? Why?

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
You look and sound just like him. It's hard
to believe you're a different man.

7NEW ANGLE7

"Smiley" hits his COMMBADGE as Odo frowns.

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
Computer, activate transport sequence,
O'Brien Beta One.

COMPUTER V.O.
Working.

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
Energize when ready.

8ANGLE ON AIRLOCK RING 8

As transporter BEAM sparkles and a thick, viscous, sludge appears. It oozes
around the airlock ring beside O'Brien and ODO stares at this, puzzled, as
"SMILEY" orders--

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
Computer, activate transport sequence,
O'Brien Beta Two.

COMPUTER V.O.
Working.

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
(watching Odo)
Transport two. Energize when ready.

9NEW ANGLE 9

"Smiley" and Odo are BEAMED away. Sparks issue from the airlock and
ALARMS begin to sound. Close on the thick substance spreading on the floor
beside O'Brien, then--

FADE
OUT.

END OF TEASER

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

10INT. WARD ROOM- TEROK NOR10

"Smiley" and Odo stand before a table with a console and viewscreen. Kira and
Garak stand behind it, flanked by two N.D. Klingons. Kira is in Terok Nor
uniform as is Garak.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(to Garak)
I told you Smiley would deliver. Even
obstinate Terrans can be retrained, given the
right motivation.

GARAK
Intendant, I bow to your wisdom. But not to
this plan. I don't believe it will work.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(irritated)
Well, yours most certainly hasn't and I am
not about to step down from my post--

GARAK
(interrupting)
Nor I from mine, Intendant--

INTENDANT / KIRA
(finishing)
--over a handful of ungrateful, irritating,
dirty little Terrans!

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
(interrupts)
I brought him-- (points at Odo)
Here for you, under deadline. Now,
will you keep your word?

INTENDANT / KIRA
Oh, Smiley, if you weren't so useful to me...
(sighs, shrugs)
Yes, I will keep my word. You can be with
your woman now, she's in the Interrogation
room.
(to Klingon officers)
Let him see her body-- then question him
about his... trip.

SMILEY / O'BRIEN
(enraged)
You bloody animals--!

11NEW ANGLE11

The N.D. Klingons drag O'Brien out of the room.

ODO
(assessingly)
I take it I'm in the mirror universe the doctor
and Major Kira discovered two years ago?

12ANGLE ON KIRA 12

As she smiles, stepping up to Odo. As she speaks, Kira begins stroking Odo's
face, hair and chest in a bold, disturbingly familiar fashion, saying sensually--

INTENDANT / KIRA
Oh, I've missed this face. And I can see that
in any universe, you are very... very...
intelligent.

ODO
What do you want with me?

GARAK
(to Kira)
And like his counterpart, he also knows
when to get to the matters of real
importance.

13NEW ANGLE13

Kira pouts, sighs, then goes to the console.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(to Odo)
I need your help.

ODO
I won't help you. I don't belong here.

GARAK
Precisely. And if you want to return to your
universe, then you will do as we ask. Only
O'Brien knows how to return you. If you
don't cooperate, I kill him.

ODO
What makes you think my people haven't
already figured out what happened to me?

14NEW ANGLE - VIEWSCREEN (OPTICAL)14

Kira tabs the console. The screen shows a playback of Bashir shooting Odo's
counterpart. Kira explains--

INTENDANT / KIRA
You see, our supervisor was killed two years
ago-- what was it Smiley said they called
you? Odo?

GARAK
As in Odo'ital, I presume?

INTENDANT / KIRA
Doesn't that mean nothing ?

GARAK
An interesting choice of name.

ODO
It wasn't of my choosing.

15ANGLE ON KIRA15

Playback done, Kira turns off the console. Smiles at Odo.

INTENDANT / KIRA
But you kept it anyway. I hope you don't
really think of yourself as nothing ?

GARAK
(irritated)
Intendant.

(to Odo)
I don't know about Cardassians in your
universe, Odo, but in this one our
storehouses are renowned. We save
everything that comes our way.

ODO
It's the same in my universe.

GARAK
Then you can appreciate how fascinating we
found your counterparts remains. Doctor
Mora couldn't stop studying them.

ODO
Mora?

GARAK
Our station doctor. He's a Bajoran I've come
to respect as a learned man of science. In
any case, the remains have been kept in
stasis.

ODO
(realizing)
That was what O'Brien left in the
airlock...my counterparts remains.

INTENDANT/KIRA
(agreeing)
So you see, no one will be looking for you,
Odo. In their eyes, you're dead. How long
you remain that way is up to you...

Odo considers this terrible situation. It's obvious he has little to lose and a lot to
gain by cooperating.

ODO
What do you want of me?

INTENDANT / KIRA
(pleased, explains)
Since your people's incursions into this
universe, a Terran rebellion has crept up.
They call themselves Maquis. They hide in
the Badlands and raid us. They've gathered
weapons and ships and are now quite a
major nuisance.
(sighs)
Your counterpart would have dealt with the
situation quickly and effectively. As it is, our
efforts have failed and the Alliance Council
has illogically given me two months to deal
with the situation. If I don't, I have to step
down.

GARAK
And because I'm her second in command, my
job is also on the line.
(to Kira)
This better not fail. I will not step down.

Kira and Garak eye each other warily. Odo interrupts--

ODO
You want me to infiltrate the Maquis?

INTENDANT / KIRA
No. Mr. Garak has an expert who is
working with us obtaining information as to
the rebels location and numbers. She's good.

KIRA (cont'd)
But every time she's provided us new
information, our attempts to stop the Terrans
are thwarted, every strike force we've sent
has been anticipated.
(to Odo)
I brought you here, Odo, to uncover the
traitor on this station that's warning the
Maquis and keeping them from being caught.

16EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)16

Time cut.

17INT. WARD ROOM - DEEP SPACE 17

Sisko, O'Brien, and Dax wait, Kira paces. O'BRIEN has a PADD. Everyone
looks up as BASHIR enters and sits.

BASHIR
(sadly)
I'm afraid I've confirmed it. The remains by
the Chief were Odo's. He's dead.

18QUICK-CUT GROUP TO KIRA18

The group is stunned, particularly Kira who turns away from the group to stare out
a viewport, overwhelmed. Sisko eyes her worriedly as he asks--

SISKO
Can you tell what happened, Chief?

O'Brien sighs, then hands Sisko the PADD he was holding.

O'BRIEN
As far as I can figure since the monitors can't
provide information, is that it was just a
stupid accident-- a rerouting overload.
--the panel was sparking and I had
just gone by the airlock, then--
(gestures)
Zap! I was lucky just to be knocked
unconscious. Odo was right behind me. The
overload surge would have torn through him
like a blade through fabric. He didn't stand a
chance.

A momentary silence falls on the group.

19C.U. ON KIRA19

Kira turns. Her eyes are wet, her voice and face grim.

KIRA
Is there any chance it was deliberate, Chief?

SISKO
(surprised)
Do you feel the constable might have been
set up, Major?

KIRA
The timing is suspicious to me, Captain. Not
too many things could hurt Odo...the
Founders know how and how to get his
attention. I want a level four sweep done on
that airlock.

SISKO
(gently)
I'll authorize it, Major. However, I'm afraid
we still have to accept that Odo has died.
It's tragic, but it happens to the best of us.

KIRA
(sighs, sits)
I understand, sir. And thank you.

SISKO
No thanks are necessary, Major.
(to group)
For now, I'm afraid we have a sad duty
before us-- services for Odo.

O'BRIEN
I'd like to arrange the memorial, if that's
alright with everyone. The constable was a
good friend.

SISKO
I'm sure that would be fine, Chief. Now.
Do we know if the constable had a will?

KIRA
(quietly)
He had a Final Testament, sir. He recorded
it with the Bajoran Legal Council last year
and gave me a copy at the time. He said I
was to be the executor if anything were to
happen to him. I'll...listen to it right away.

SISKO
Please let me know if the constable had any
final requests, Major.

She nods.

BASHIR
Sir. The constable told me once he didn't
care to be studied on the event of his death,
so I didn't conduct an analysis on his
remains, aside from ensuring that they were,
indeed, Odo's. But--

He hesitates.

SISKO
Are you saying you want to conduct an
autopsy, Doctor?

BASHIR
Technically, it is my province as to whether
remains are analyzed or simply designated as
deceased, but this situation is a bit different.
(to Kira)
Particularly, Major, if you feel the constable
might have met with foul play. I would
necessarily have to perform various tests--

KIRA
(interrupting)
No, Doctor. If the chief finds something
during his sweep, then maybe, but for now,
let him rest.

20ANGLE ON O'BRIEN20

Dax turns to O'Brien.

DAX
When were you planning on holding the
memorial, Chief?

O'BRIEN
It'll take me the better part of a day to
complete a level four scan.

DAX
I'd like to help you, Chief.

SISKO
Good idea, Dax. Chief, I suggest you hold
the memorial in here, say two days time at
1700 hours?
(O'Brien nods)
Then I'll handle the notifications through
local and subspace channels.
(a beat)
Dismissed.

Everyone files out of the room.

21EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)21

As before.

22INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - TEROK NOR22
Garak and Odo enter. Various N.D. Terrans are being tortured in background. A
Klingon sees Odo and immediately snaps to attention.

N.D. KLINGON
Supervisor! You may take over the
interrogation, sir!

Odo is taken aback. He turns to Garak who gestures at the Klingon to continue,
then explains--

GARAK
Your counterpart was a highly respected
man here, Odo. In fact, my only objection to
bringing you here was that you'd enjoy it too
much. I figure I'll have to find a strong
incentive for you to do your job and not try
to stay here.
(a beat)
My investigator was doing a superb job but
the Intendant had her heart set on bringing
you here.
(threateningly)
Now that you're here, you better hope you'll
find the traitor on this station quickly.

ODO
And if I don't?

GARAK
Then O'Brien won't be the only one killed.
Do we understand one another, shapeshifter?

Odo considers this, then gesturing with his chin, says--

ODO
I can obtain information without these
outdated methods.

GARAK
Indeed? Then I'll introduce you to my
investigator, perhaps the two of you could
work together...

Garak turns and exits the room, forcing Odo to follow him.

23EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)23

As before

24INT. WARD ROOM - TEROK NOR24

Garak, Odo and an annoyed Intendant wait in the Ward Room.

INTENDANT / KIRA
What's taking her so long? You two should
be interrogating Terrans!

GARAK
Actually, Intendant, Odo feels our methods
are outdated.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(surprised)
Really? Your counterpart didn't.
Just how different are you?

The door opens behind them.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN - OFFSCREEN
For one thing, Intendant, this one hides his
desires.

25ANGLE ON ODO25

Odo looks up. Lwaxana Troi's mirror double is inside the Ward Room, eyeing him
knowingly. Close on her amused expression, then--
FADE
OUT.
END OF ACT ONE

=======================================================

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

26INT. WARD ROOM - TEROK NOR26

Kira, Garak watch as Lwaxana reads Odo like a book.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Ah, Odo... you're intrigued. And so full of
questions...

ODO
You are Garak's investigator?

GARAK
You know this woman?

ODO
In my universe she's an ambassador.

INTENDANT / KIRA
And in this one, as well. This is the
Sovereign Lwaxana M'Leyn from Betazed.
She's renowned for her superior telepathic
skills.

GARAK
Yes, I asked the sovereign to probe our
Terrans. Unfortunately, she hasn't found
anything helpful yet.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Don't worry, Garak, I found your rebels, I'll
find your traitor. In fact, I just spoke to
Doctor Mora about getting some tri-
psilosynine to boost my telepathy. With the
right drugs and telepathic technique's--
(eyes Odo suggestively)
I could read a stone.

ODO
(ignoring her innuendo)
And what have you discovered so far?

GARAK
I do like that about you, Odo. Right to the
point and no nonsense.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
--and nervous... and scared...
(to Odo, intently)
You don't have to fear me, Odo.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(annoyed)
Enough. We need answers, M'Leyn.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
No need to be jealous, dear. Odo isn't
attracted to me. It's you he desires. Or
Major Kira anyway...

GARAK
(irritated)
Would you two rutting sows get on with the
business at hand? Some of us would like to
get work done.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(angered)
I'd keep a civil tongue unless you want it
ripped out, Garak!

GARAK
If I have to step down because you were too
busy planning sexual escapades, Intendant,
you will die!

The two glare at one another.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(sighs wearily)
You're both giving me a headache.
(decisively)
I'm going to show Odo around the station,
fill him in on what I know, come along,
dear...

Lwaxana takes the startled Odo's arm and exits.

27EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE 27

As before.

28INT. KIRA'S QUARTERS 28

Kira sits at her personal terminal. She's watching Odo's Final Testament.
(OPTICAL) Mid-sentence--

ODO COMM IMAGE
-- divided between the Orphanage and the
Restoration Society after any debts I've
incurred have been satisfied.
(a beat)
I authorize you, Major, to bestow on those
of our colleagues who may survive me,
namely Captain Sisko, Chief O'Brien, Doctor
Bashir, and Commander Dax, any item from
my personal belongings which you feel they
might appreciate as a memento of good will
from myself to them.
(softly, intently)
Lastly, for you... Kira. I leave you whatever
of my remaining belongings you wish and...
my personal logs. I only ask that you don't
read them all at once nor immediately, but
with the same careful deliberation in which I
composed them. End Final Testament.

29INT. INFIRMARY - TEROK NOR29

Lwaxana and Odo enter. Doctor Mora is at a CONSOLE, then he turns and
double-takes, saying in astonishment--

MORA
You must be the other shapeshifter the
Intendant spoke of.
(studying him)
A spitting image... Well, welcome to Terok
Nor. Now, what can I do for the two of
you?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I'm showing the investigator around the
station, helping him understand our Terran
situation.

MORA
(taken aback)
I've nothing to do with Terrans.

ODO
You don't treat them?

MORA
(derisively)
Oh, please! One dies, another takes his
place. They breed like rats. They don't need
treatment.

Odo is shocked. Lwaxana watches him with interest.

ODO
(changing tack)
The Sovereign said there was a drug which
would increase her telepathy?

MORA
Yes, tri-psilosynine. It increases the para-
cortical secretions in Betazoids, which
increases their telepathic ability.

ODO
And how soon would it work?

MORA
(interest piqued)
Are you a scientist in your world,
Investigator? Our supervisor never had any
interest in medicine.

ODO
My interest is in answers, Doctor.

MORA
It would take effect within an hour, but the
Sovereign wouldn't notice until she probed
someone.

30ANGLE ON DOORWAY 30

As Gul Dukat enters, unsteady and coughing. Odo and Mora help Dukat onto the
table. Dukat doesn't notice Odo.

31ANGLE ON MORA31

Mora SCANS Dukat. Odo watches, staying beside Dukat.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(to Odo)
That's Gul Dukat. He's the Cardassian
liaison officer.

MORA
(to Dukat)
Your cardiopulmonary system is overtaxed.
You shouldn't have walked here, Gul.

DUKAT
And have... Terrans laughing as... I'm carried
here?
(notices Odo, smiles)
Ah... a familiar face too long gone from us.
(coughs and wheezes)
I've missed that face.

ODO
(to Mora)
What is wrong with him?

MORA
The Terrans bombed a mine on Bajor twelve
years ago. Many Bajorans and Cardassians
were injured. The inhaled gases and minerals
caused a syndrome we call Kalla-Nohra.

ODO
(realizing)
Gallitep...

DUKAT
So you know our history... like your
predecessor. That's why Garak and I were...
his good friends.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(quickly, to Odo)
We should allow the doctor to treat Mr.
Dukat.
(to Mora)
Doctor, when can I return for the tri-
psilosynine?

MORA
The replicator's synthesizing it. It'll be ready
within the hour.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Excellent. We'll return after we've
completed the tour.

32EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)32

As before

33INT. DOCKING RING AIRLOCK - DS933

O'Brien kneels by AIRLOCK RING, SCANS with rodlike DEVICE. DAX is
inside AIRLOCK, doing the same with a TRICORDER.

DAX
I'm not reading anything unusual, Chief.
You?

O'BRIEN
No, but I'll sweep the area twice. The Major
wouldn't take too kindly to my doing a half-
baked job.

DAX
It's just hard for her to accept Odo died in
some stupid accident.

O'BRIEN
(irritated)
He was my friend, too...and the best
kayaking partner I ever had.

DAX
I'm sure Julian would go kayaking with you,
Chief.

O'BRIEN
Nah, Julian doesn't like my singing. Odo
didn't mind it. Or if he did, he didn't say.

34ANGLE ON DAX34

Dax smiles, then starts to SCAN further into the airlock. O'Brien looks up from
his work and notices her.

O'BRIEN
I wouldn't bother getting readings in there.
Odo was over here--

Suddenly Dax's scanner BEEPS and she frowns at it.

DAX
(from SCANNER)
That's odd. You scanned the area last night?
(O'Brien nods)
Then I must be picking up residual cellular
readings from you.

O'BRIEN
But I never went in the airlock...

The two exchange a look and Dax quickly SCANS again.

DAX
I'm definitely picking up your cellular
patterns. You're sure you didn't come in
here, Chief?

O'BRIEN
Positive. I only scanned out here.

DAX
Then we have a mystery on our hands, Chief.

35EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)35

Time cut.

36INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - TEROK NOR36

Various N.D. Terrans are in background being interrogated. Odo and Lwaxana
enter. Lwaxana presses a hand to her head.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
A moment, please, Odo-- this room strains
my shielding terribly.

ODO
I'm not surprised.

37ANGLE ON APPROACHING KLINGONS37

Two Klingon women, Lursa and B'Etor stride up and begin circling Odo. It is
obvious they are lecherous women.

B'ETOR
Lursa, we've seen this face before.

LURSA
The only one on this station man enough for
the two of us.

B'ETOR
(suggestively)
Obviously he missed us terribly to come back
from the dead.

38C.U. ON LWAXANA38

Lwaxana pulls her hand from her face, sees the two sisters and makes a face as
they continue to circle Odo.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Ladies, please... The investigator is here on
business.

LURSA
Oh, is that what you call it now?

ODO
(ignoring this)
What do you two do on Terok Nor?

39QUARTER-PROFILE ON ODO39

As Lursa steps up to him. B'Etor leers and asks him--

B'ETOR
What would you like us to do?

LURSA
Your predecessor liked us to--

Lursa whispers in his ear. Odo's eyes widen and he clears his throat.

ODO
I believe that, uh... is illegal.

B'ETOR
Not in this universe!

B'Etor and Lursa burst into laughter.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(sternly)
This is all very amusing, ladies, but Odo is
trying to do his job.

LURSA
(to Odo)
And I'm sure he does it well.

ODO
(interrupts)
I would appreciate some answers... uh,
ladies.

40NEW ANGLE40

Lursa exchanges a look with B'Etor, then shrugs.

LURSA
We supervise the processing plant. Your
old job.

B'ETOR
But no one could do it as masterfully as you,
Supervisor.

LURSA
(warily)
And now that you're back...

Lwaxana watches Odo's response carefully.

ODO
I have no interest in staying here. I intend to
return to my universe.

B'ETOR
Why should we believe you?

ODO
I don't lie.

LURSA
And we're to believe that?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I think you can, ladies.

41ANGLE ON LWAXANA41

The two Klingons look at Lwaxana, then at Odo consideringly. Lwaxana watches
Odo thoughtfully.

42EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)42
As before.

43INT. INFIRMARY 43

Bashir and Kira are listening to Dax and O'Brien's story.

KIRA
And you've never been in that airlock before,
Chief?

O'BRIEN
My first time in it was to investigate the
accident.

DAX
I found his cellular trace well into the
airlock, Kira.

BASHIR
Is it possible you forgot servicing the airlock
at some time, Chief?

O'BRIEN
I don't think so.

Kira frowns, tired. She sighs and orders--

KIRA
Chief, I want you to go through your work
logs. See if there's any time you were in that
airlock that you might have overlooked.

O'Brien nods and exits. Kira turns to Dax and says--

Even if it turns out O'Brien's never gone
within a hundred feet of that airlock, Dax,
what do you think the readings indicate?

DAX
(admits)
I'm not sure. But we've met up with our
share of clones, replicants, mirror universe
counterparts...

KIRA
(considering)
Julian, do you still have Odo's remains in
stasis?

BASHIR
Yes, Major. I was going to release them
once you told me what type of funeral rites
the constable wanted.

44PAN WITH KIRA44

Kira begins to pace, considering. She finally sighs.

KIRA
(regretfully)
I know Odo said he didn't want to be
studied, but... as his legal representative,
Doctor, I authorize you to examine his
remains.

BASHIR
(nods, gently)
I understand, Major.

45ANGLE ON DAX 45

Kira nods and Bashir begins to gather EQUIPMENT. Dax watches Kira exit
sadly. Dax and Bashir exchange a worried look. Close on Dax's expression, then-
-

FADE
OUT.

END OF ACT TWO

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE

ACT THREE

FADE IN:

46INT. ODO'S QUARTERS - DEEP SPACE NINE46

Kira carries a satchel. She studies a small, metal figurine atop a cabinet, then puts
it in her satchel.

KIRA
Alright, Odo, I did what you asked. I hope
you approve of my choices.
(sighs regretfully)
I just don't know what to keep for myself.

Her COMMBADGE signals.

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
O'Brien to Major Kira.

KIRA
(to commbadge)
Go ahead.

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
I finished going over the logs, Major.

KIRA
You don't sound happy, Chief.

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
Well, Major, the first year on the station I
was so pressed for time, a lot of routine
maintenance was logged without a specific
work site. I might have been in the airlock
and just don't remember.

KIRA
You're saying you don't know, Chief?

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
I don't remember, Major, but it's possible.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

KIRA
That's alright, Chief. Thank you for
checking.

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
No problem, sir. O'Brien out.

47MID-ANGLE OF KIRA47

Kira shakes her head and then gathers herself to leave. She looks around, up and
down, then freezes, stunned.

48C.U. ON ODO'S PAIL48

It is beside the cabinet in front of her.

49C.U. ON KIRA49

As she sets her satchel down, kneels. She picks up the pail, examining it. She
looks inside it, smiles tearfully. Then she hugs it to her, sits on the floor and
begins to softly cry.

50EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)50

As before.

51INT. INFIRMARY - TEROK NOR51

Odo and Lwaxana enter. Mora is at a computer terminal, Dukat is gone. A
HYPOSPRAY is beside Mora.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Doctor, I've returned!

MORA
It's ready, Sovereign.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Good. Garak is practically biting at my heels
for new information.

MORA
Well, once this takes effect, you're certain to
obtain some.

52C.U. ON LWAXANA 52

Lwaxana extends her arm. Mora presses the HYPO against it. Then Lwaxana
takes Odo's arm and smiles at Mora.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Thank you, Doctor. And I'm sure Garak will
thank you as well.

Lwaxana and Odo exit. Then Mora hits his commbadge.

MORA
(to commbadge)
Mora to Garak, private line.

GARAK COMM VOICE
Go ahead, Doctor, I'm alone.

MORA
The sovereign just left with the shapeshifter.

GARAK COMM VOICE
Understood, doctor.

53EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)53

Time cut.

54INT. QUARK'S - BAR FRONT - 54

O'Brien sits, holding a PADD. There are TWO cups before him. Sisko enters and
sits down beside him. ROM steps up.

ROM
What can I get for you, Captain?

SISKO
A whiskey sour-- genuine.

ROM
Right away.

Rom steps away and Sisko rubs his eyes, O'Brien notes--

O'BRIEN
Rough day, sir?

SISKO
I was working on the status report and
Security's entry was delayed. I almost called
Odo to complain before I remembered...

O'BRIEN
I understand. I came in here an hour ago to
work on Odo's eulogy--
(indicates PADD)
--and I can't seem to get past the opening
line.

Rom returns with two drinks and sets them in front of Sisko.

ROM
There you go. A genuine whiskey sour, no
synthehol.

Sisko eyes the second glass.

SISKO
What's the other drink for?

ROM
(embarrassed, explains)
It's for Odo. Since his remains aren't being
sold, it's hard to pay proper respects. So,
until the memorial service, everyone gets a
free drink, an extra spin at Dabo and an extra
hour in the holosuites to use in his honor.

SISKO
(considers this, then frowns)
And where's Quark?

ROM
(explains)
He said that since Odo never wanted to see
his face around the station, he was going to
stay in his room until Odo's memorial
service.

Rom steps away to serve another customer.

O'BRIEN
(thoughtfully)
You know, sir, as paying respects go, that
actually makes...sense.

55EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR 55

As before

56INT. WARD ROOM - TEROK 56

Lwaxana and Odo enter. Kira and Garak wait, Garak demands--

GARAK
Well? Have you found anything Odo?

ODO
One thing I see that hasn't changed, Garak, is
that Cardassians in both universes are
impatient.

GARAK
Your position isn't at stake, shapeshifter.

ODO
But it is, Garak. You said you'd return me if
I found your traitor. Unless you go back on
your word, I do intend to find that person or
persons for you.

GARAK
Persons? You think it might be a
conspiracy?

INTENDANT / KIRA
Of course! We should have seen that,
Garak. How else can the Terrans get away
with so much?

ODO
(disgusted)
No doubt they manage to while you and your
officers concentrate on your pointless sexual
exploits. Nearly everyone I've interviewed
so far seems to be preoccupied with sex and
their own petty interests.

Kira approaches him, speaking provocatively--

INTENDANT / KIRA
After years of slavery, Odo, it's only natural
we Bajorans would wish to return to the...
simple... sensual... pleasures.

ODO
(changing subject)
And what about the Klingons? They weren't
slaves to the Terrans.

GARAK
(knowingly)
You must have met Lursa and B'Etor.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Yes. They remember his predecessor with a
great deal of... fondness.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(disgusted)
You stay away from those two, Odo.
They're pure poison.

ODO
I think that phrase could describe nearly
everyone on this station.

GARAK
And who are the exceptions, Odo?

ODO
It's too soon to tell.

GARAK
(angering)
Don't tell me that! You have some idea of
what's going on and who is behind it. You
will tell us!

ODO
When I'm certain of my facts and not a
moment before, Garak.

INTENDANT / KIRA
Enough. I'm satisfied Odo is doing his job,
Garak. He's already got ideas and it's only
his second day.
(to Lwaxana)
Did you get your injection?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Yes, Intendant. It will begin taking effect
within the hour. The effect will be strongest
an hour after that. I'll be going to the
interrogation room at that time.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(to Garak)
You see? Everything is under control.
(to Lwaxana)
Let me know your results.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I'll be happy to, Intendant.
(to Odo)
I believe the Intendant would like a word
with Garak, Investigator.

Lwaxana exits with Odo. Garak turns to Kira and declares--

GARAK
This man is not the supervisor. You can't be
sure of his loyalties.

INTENDANT / KIRA
I'm convinced I have the right man for the
job, Garak.

GARAK
And if it turns out you don't?

INTENDANT / KIRA
Then I have the pleasure of watching you go
down with me.

57EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR 57

Time cut.

58INT. INFIRMARY - DEEP SPACE 58

Sisko enters. Bashir and Dax wait, Bashir hands him a PADD.

BASHIR
Aside from a cellular anomaly, I found no
abnormalities in my examination of Odo's
remains, sir.

Sisko assesses the PADD's readout and asks--

SISKO
What could account for that anomaly,
doctor?

BASHIR
Genotoxic damage from the energy surge,
various types of ionic radiation; since Odo
was in the airlock, I don't even discount ionic
spatial drift.

SISKO
But that would be negligible.

BASHIR
It's a secondary base-pair sequence glitch
that I would've missed it if I hadn't done such
a detailed analysis, sir--
(a beat)
--therefore, my official conclusion is that the
remains are the constables. The genotype
matches and I ruled out a clone or replicant
due to lack of genetic drift. I'm afraid Odo's
death was simply an unfortunate accident.

SISKO
Thank you, Doctor. Although I almost wish
you'd found something for the Major's sake.

Bashir nods and returns to his work. Sisko turns to Dax.

SISKO
Dozens of messages of sympathy have
arrived and the Head of Starfleet Security
sends their regrets.

DAX
I'm sure Kira will appreciate that.
(he nods)
Was that all, Benjamin?

SISKO
Not exactly. I received word from the
Kentucky. They were headed for a
conference on Klaestron when they received
notice. Their Captain is dropping off a guest
who wishes to attend Odo's memorial. If
you would see to their accommodations,
Commander?

DAX
Of course, Sir. Name of our guest?

SISKO
Ambassador Lwaxana Troi.

Sisko exits. Close on Dax's expression, then--

FADE
OUT.

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE

ACT FOUR

FADE IN:

59INT. N.D. QUARTERS - TEROK NOR59

Odo and Lwaxana enter. The room is lavishly furnished, with a large bed in
middle of the living area. Mid-sentence--

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
--focused exclusively on increasing our
telepathic skills. I'm sure you see why we
chose to do so?

Odo remains silent. Lwaxana sighs, changing tack--

LWAXANA
Well, was your tour of the station helpful?
It's really not so bad here once you get used
to it.

ODO
I don't intend to stay here long enough to get
used to it.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
You find it frightening, don't you?
(He says nothing)
Why do you deny your feelings, Odo?

ODO
In my universe, one's feelings are a private
matter.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
You just don't like the idea of someone
knowing how you feel. You hide a lot of
your feelings quite deeply. It's what causes
you so much pain, Odo.

ODO
How I feel about matters in this universe is
irrelevant.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(knowingly)
And what of the way you feel about matters
in your own universe?
(a beat, sighs)
You're a stubborn man, Odo. I suppose I'd
better go center myself before I get to work
in the interrogation room.

Lwaxana exits and Odo sighs, relaxes.

60INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR - TEROK NOR60

Lwaxana steps out of Odo's room. The door closes and she shuts her eyes,
focusing her telepathic power--

61INT. N.D. QUARTERS - TEROK 61

Garak steps into Odo's room, holding MAJOR KIRA by the arm. She is bruised,
gasping. Odo angrily demands--

ODO
Garak, what's the meaning of this?

GARAK
I figured I'd better send O'Brien back for
something that might motivate you,
shapeshifter.

62ANGLE ON GARAK62

Garak throws Kira onto the floor and moves to strike her. Odo grabs his wrist,
stopping him.

ODO
You hurt her, Garak, and I'll--

GARAK
(interrupts, pleased)
-- well, it looks like I found something to
motivate even you. Don't worry. She'll be
fine so long as you do your job.

63ANGLE ON ODO 63

Kira gasps for air and looks up at Odo. He lets Garak go to kneel down beside
her. Satisfied, Garak exits.

KIRA
(puzzled and breathless)
Odo...I thought... you were dead.

ODO
They left my counterpart's remains on the
station to trick you. Are you alright?

Kira waves this off, struggling to sit and Odo helps her.

KIRA
I'm fine... why... are you here?

ODO
The Intendant wants me to find a traitor,
someone that's helping the Terran rebels
avoid capture.

64PAN WITH ODO64

As he helps Kira onto the bed. Odo eyes her with concern. He hesitates to speak,
then finally says heavily--

ODO
Kira, do you know why you're here?

KIRA
(shakes head, wincing)
I was in my quarters when O'Brien came and
beamed us here. Garak was waiting with his
goons. I fought, but... He said if you didn't
work for him, he'd hurt me. Or worse...
(urgently)
But I don't want you to think about me,
Odo. If you get the chance I want you to--

She stops as Odo turns away, distressed. Kira asks--

What is it, Odo? What's going on?

65C.U. ON ODO65

As he gathers himself, faces her, and to Kira's surprise, takes her hands in his and
explains quietly--

ODO
Kira. You're here because Garak knows...
that I care for you.
(a beat)
No matter what you order me to do or what
happens, I won't let you be hurt... I can't.

Odo awaits her response, but Kira just stares at him. Finally Odo lets her go,
turning away, devastated.

ODO
(falters)
I'm... sorry, Major... Even if you order me,
I...

66ANGLE ON KIRA66
As she turns Odo back. He won't meet her eyes and she makes him look at her.
Kira's voice is incredulous as she asks--

KIRA
You're in love with me?

ODO
(nodding miserably)
You can courtmartial me on our return. I'll
even resign if you--

Kira kisses him suddenly, deeply. After a moment, Odo pulls back from her in
shock. Kira smiles and says softly--

KIRA
I've... suspected you cared for me, a long
time now...constable.

67C.U. ON ODO'S EXPRESSION67

As Kira reaches a hand up to his face. She strokes the angles of his face.

ODO
(faltering)
--Major, this...isn't a good idea.

KIRA
If they know already, it doesn't matter...does
it?
(she kisses him insistently)
Does it?

ODO
(dazed)
I...I suppose not.

Kira smiles at his bewilderment and strokes his face again as he looks about
nervously.

KIRA
Forget them for now, Odo. Just concentrate
on us...on this--

She kisses him, adding--

--we may not have this time again.

68C.U. ON ON BOTH68

As she pulls Odo closer still kissing him, then whispers--

KIRA
You know, despite the situation... I'm glad
I'm here. With you...

Odo is clearly overwhelmed by her nearness and he nods, then slips his
arms around her.

ODO
Me too...

We Close on their deepening kiss, then--

69EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)69

Time cut.

70INT. ODO'S QUARTERS - DEEP SPACE NINE70

Dax with Lwaxana Troi who looks around with interest.

LWAXANA
It's decidedly... eclectic.

DAX
Odo felt that in here he could explore what it
meant to be a shapeshifter. He chose every
object in here with a lot of care.

LWAXANA
For their shape and texture I take it?

DAX
(surprised)
That's right! How did you know?

Lwaxana turns to face her and says--

LWAXANA
Just because I couldn't read him, didn't mean
I couldn't understand him. He was a
remarkable man.

DAX
Yes, and I'm grateful I got the chance to
share his feelings through one of my hosts
during my Zhian'tara. I cherish the memories
he passed on to me, they were very... special.
I actually got to know what it felt like for
him to change shape.

LWAXANA
(gently)
And how he felt about Major Kira?

DAX
(admits)
I sensed it, but didn't interfere.

LWAXANA
Odo's gone now, Commander. The truth
can't hurt him anymore.

DAX
No, but it might make things difficult for
Kira.

LWAXANA
Knowing he loved her? Do you feel she
would judge him that harshly?

DAX
She's taking his death pretty hard. Telling
her might make it even harder for her.

LWAXANA
And it might ease some of her pain.
(as Dax frowns)
Don't worry, dear, I won't say anything. It's
not my place.

71EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)71

As before.

72INT. N.D. QUARTERS - TEROK NOR72

Kira and Odo are in bed, covered to bare shoulders. It is obvious they've had a
tryst. Kira is disheveled. Odo's fingers graze along her cheek, awestruck, as he
murmurs--

ODO
...Nerys.

73EXTREME C.U. ON ODO73

As Kira snuggles closer to him. Odo closes his eyes and holds her tightly. Close
on his face, then--

73AGRADUAL REVEAL73A

We pull back with ODO WHO IS ACTUALLY HOLDING LWAXANA. Odo
and Lwaxana are both fully dressed. Lwaxana sighs--

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
-- Odo.

74ANGLE ON ODO74

As he opens his eyes, horrified. Lwaxana smiles provocatively. Enraged, Odo
grips her by the neck, holding her down.

ODO
Why?!

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(unafraid)
To make a point.

ODO
(tightly)
And just what would that be?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Think, Odo. If I'm able to do this to you, if I
can so easily read your desires, your fears--

Lwaxana narrows her eyes and Odo winces, releasing her.

Do you really believe I can't find the traitor
for Garak?

ODO
You're the traitor.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
No. But I help him when I can.

ODO
Who is it?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
Why should I trust you?

ODO
It's you that can't be trusted.

Odo pulls away, sits. Lwaxana sits, too, watching him.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
There's no reason to feel shame or guilt,
Odo. You did absolutely nothing wrong.

ODO
(voice low)
I've experienced pain before, even
humiliation. But I never felt disgraced...
until now.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(sighs, sadly)
Funny. My daughter said something similar
the last time I saw her.

ODO
(surprised)
Your daughter?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(explains)
Deanna. She's half-Terran. She's the reason
I'm helping the Maquis.

ODO
(realizing)
Of course. The Lwaxana in my universe also
has a daughter.

75NEW ANGLE75

As Lwaxana speaks with a mother's anger.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I had two daughters, Odo. Their father was
a Terran spy altered to look Bajoran. I didn't
even suspect until Kestra's telepathy didn't
develop normally. By that time, I was
pregnant with Deanna.

ODO
(knowingly)
You turned him in to the Alliance.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(demands)
Should my daughters and I be punished for
his treachery?
(explains)
They still had a chance to be accepted in the
Alliance even being half-Terran, but Kestra
didn't pass her telepathic attainment
ceremony.
(a beat)
She killed herself. Deanna had even less
telepathic skill.
(decidedly)
I wasn't about to lose them both.

Odo nods and Lwaxana sighs, continuing--

Deanna's been in hiding for years. My
Alliance contact relays our messages. She's
always been so far that I can't read her, but
some months ago, I was told she was with
the Maquis. Since then I help the Alliance
track them. It's the closest I can be to her
and still protect her. One day I'll feel her
presence... see her. But if you help the
Intendant, Deanna will be killed. I won't let
that happen! You will help me-

ODO
I don't even want to be here, but I don't have
a choice!

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
All I'm asking is for you to take Deanna with
you when you return. It's the only place I
know she'll be truly safe.

ODO
I can't do that.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I'll do anything you want, Odo.
(tearful)
I'd do anything for Deanna, she's all I care
about--

76QUICK-CUT TO DOORWAY76

Garak and Kira saunter into the room, unannounced.

INTENDANT / KIRA
My, how touching... did you get all that, Mr.
Garak?

77WIDE-ANGLE GROUP77

Garak nods, smiling. Lwaxana looks at Kira and Garak with dismay. Close on her
expression, then--

FADE
OUT.

END OF ACT FOUR

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE

ACT FIVE

FADE IN:

78INT. WARD ROOM - DEEP SPACE NINE78

Sisko, O'Brien, Bashir and Dax are seated. Kira stands. The satchel is on the table
in front of her.<

INTERCUT SPEAKERS.

KIRA
Bajoran custom dictates handing out any
gifts from a decedent before their funeral
service.
(softly)
I'm not good with speeches so I'll just say
that these are items Odo wanted you to have.

Kira pulls a small sundial out of the satchel, gives it to Sisko.

SISKO
I haven't seen one of these outside of a
museum. It's magnificent.

KIRA
Odo told me once how fascinated you were
with time pieces, sir.

SISKO
I will always think of him when I see this
one. In fact, I'm putting it on my office desk.

Kira nods, pleased. She reaches into the satchel and hands Bashir a computer rod.

KIRA
Odo knew how much you enjoyed music,
Doctor. These are some of his favorite
compositions.

BASHIR
Thank you, Major. If it's not prohibited, I'd
like to play this during the constable's
service.

KIRA
It's not forbidden, Doctor, in fact, I think
he'd like that.

Kira reaches into the satchel and hands Jadzia a small, metal figurine. Dax cradles
it, then looks at Kira.

DAX
(tearfully)
Thanks a lot, Kira. I promised myself I
wasn't going to cry today.

KIRA
Join the line, Dax, I already broke my own
vow about that.

Kira turns to O'Brien who looks uncomfortable.

O'BRIEN
I don't want anything, Major. My memories
of kayaking with Odo are enough.

Kira shrugs, puts a computer rod in front of him.

KIRA
It's just some of those detective novels Odo
liked. I know you both enjoyed them, Chief.

O'Brien looks at the rod, then nods his thanks to Kira.

SISKO
If that's all, I think we should prepare for the
memorial.

79ANGLE ON DOORWAY79

As everyone nods and leaves the Ward Room, except Kira, who starts to fold the
satchel. Quark enters the room.

KIRA
What do you want, Quark?

QUARK
I understand you were Odo's executor?
(she nods)
Well, I'm here because I knew you'd be
dividing his estate before his service,
Bajoran-fashion, which I might add, is also
an old Ferengi custom--
(Kira scowls)
--so I've come as one of Odo's closest friends
to receive my memento of him.
(looks around)
Where is everyone?

KIRA
They got their memento's and it's almost time
for Odo's service.

QUARK
But what about my memento?

Kira is about to argue, then shrugs tiredly, hands him the satchel, and exits, leaving
him looking at with dismay.

80EXT. SPACE - TEROK NOR (OPTICAL)80

As before.

81INT. WARD ROOM - TEROK NOR81

Garak and Kira stand before the seated Odo and Lwaxana.

INTENDANT / KIRA
You know, Sovereign, I didn't believe Garak
when he told me you were the traitor, but
now--
(to Odo)
And you! Some investigator. Complaining
about our sexual escapades...

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
That was my doing, Intendant. Don't blame
him.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(infuriated)
I lost a lot of good officers due to you. I
trusted you! Oh, your sentence will be most
unpleasant.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(scornfully)
You can't touch me and you know it.

82SPLAY ANGLE ON GROUP82

Lwaxana narrows her eyes and Kira and Garak grab their heads, wincing. Kira
glares at Lwaxana, angrily declaring--

INTENDANT / KIRA
You won't get away with this!

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
If you kill me, you'll never find your traitor,
Intendant.

ODO
Enough of this.
(to Garak)
Tell her, Garak.

83ANGLE ON GARAK83

Garak looks nervously to Kira, then to Lwaxana and back at Odo. He frowns.

GARAK
I have no idea what you're talking about,
shapeshifter.

84SLOW ZOOM & REMAIN ON ODO'S 84

As he stands, angry and disgusted. He looks at Kira.

ODO
Your traitor, Intendant, is your second
officer, Garak. With his consultant, he was
planning to continue thwarting your efforts
and bring in the Maquis himself, securing his
place as Intendant.

84AQUICK-CUT TO GARAK'S REACTION & RETURN84A

GARAK
I don't know where you came up with such a
fanciful idea but--

ODO
(interrupts)
It makes perfect sense. Since my arrival, I've
been shown respect, good will, even sexual
interest. Everyone here has treated me as
they used to treat my counterpart.
(to Garak)
Except you. You've been angry and
mistrustful of me since I arrived, despite the
fact that I discovered my counterpart used to
be your good friend. Now why is that,
Garak?

GARAK
Just because you share his face doesn't mean
you are he.

ODO
Is that why you foisted Lwaxana on me? Or
was your real reason to keep me at arms
length yet still be able to keep tabs on my
progress?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I work for myself, Odo.

ODO
Sovereign, your telepathic skill is
exceptional, far more than enough to
uncover a traitor. So that injection you
received wasn't meant to assist you with
finding them. It was to test my allegiance.
And I was a fool for letting you.
(to Garak)
But I congratulate you. As her Alliance
contact, with her skills at your command,
what goals couldn't you accomplish? You
only had to keep one secret from her.

GARAK
I don't know what you're talking about,
shapeshifter.

ODO
(to Lwaxana)
The Lwaxana of my universe cannot read
me, this is to your credit. However, she can't
read Cardassians either. And neither can
you. Never once have you remarked on
what you've perceived from Garak or any
other Cardassian on Terok Nor.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
So what if I can't read Cardassians? Does it
matter?

ODO
It matters because power is everything to
Garak and nothing will keep him from it.
You're a valuable ally, but he can't keep you
here without some means of manipulation.
(gently)
I saw your worry when you spoke of your
daughter. When was the last time you saw
her? Sensed her with your mind?

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
(admits)
Years. I'd hoped to be close enough to
communicate directly--
(gaze narrowing)
--but Garak assured me I'd be putting her in
danger, that another Betazoid on the
Alliance might sense my concern. So he
personally delivered our messages.

ODO
(pointedly)
I wonder how he could do that for so many
years without someone taking notice?
(gently, to Lwaxana)
If you could read Garak, Lwaxana, you'd
know your daughter is dead. Saying she was
too far for you to sense and keeping you
from seeing her, was his method of
controlling you. A fake message now and
then was a small price to pay for your
assistance.
(to Garak)
But I've come to learn what this universe
thinks of Terrans. Even useful ones are a
capricious whim away from death. You
wouldn't waste your resources on a half-
Terran woman from a priveleged household
without useful skills.

GARAK
This is all pure speculation!

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I demand to speak to Deanna, Garak.

Garak says nothing, merely looking sullen. Lwaxana's expression fills with sorrow
and fury. She locks her gaze on Garak who suddenly grabs his head and stands.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I might not be able to read you, Garak, but I
can hurt you--
(Garak gasps)
The tri-psylosynine is quite potent. I believe
I could even kill you...

85SLOW ZOOM ON GARAK85

As he gasps and wavers. Blood pours from his nose and mouth. Screaming, he
falls to the floor, dead.

85AC.U. OF GARAK'S FACE85A

86SOFT-CUT TO LWAXANA86

Lwaxana turns to Kira, her face blank, her tone dull.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I'll accept that sentence you were planning
on dispensing, Intendant.

Kira looks at Lwaxana with grudging respect.

INTENDANT / KIRA
I don't feel like handling judicial matters
today, Sovereign.

87ANGLE ON KIRA87

Lwaxana looks up, surprised and gratified. Kira smiles at her genuinely, then she
turns to Odo.

INTENDANT / KIRA
You aren't like your predecessor, Odo.
You're far more perceptive.
(hits COMMBADGE)
O'Brien, report to the Ward Room
immediately.

O'BRIEN COMM VOICE
Right away, Intendant.

INTENDANT / KIRA
(to Odo)
I owe you my life. I'm keeping my word,
you will be returned. But I need to ask one
thing more of you--
(Odo nods)
The incursions from your universe into ours
cause unrest. They nearly cost me my
position and they have to stop. The only one
here who can configure the transporter to
crossover is O'Brien.

ODO
(understanding)
You want me to take him with me.

INTENDANT / KIRA
He can have his freedom. I'll miss his
technical expertise, but I'll be rid of a large
potential problem. As you noted, no one
here will notice one less Terran.
(to Lwaxana)
If your daughter were alive, Sovereign, I'd
let her go, too.

Lwaxana nods tearfully.

LWAXANA / SOVEREIGN
I know, Intendant.
(to Odo)
Odo. I... forgive me.

ODO
You acted on behalf of your daughter. No
apologies are necessary.

88REVERSE ANGLE ON DOORWAY88

As Lwaxana smiles tearfully at Odo. O'Brien enters warily.

O'BRIEN
Reporting as ordered, Intendant. What did
you want to see me about?

89INT. WARD ROOM - DEEP SPACE NINE89

The station staff, Lwaxana, Quark, Rom, Keiko, N.D. station officers are seated
respectfully in the Ward Room. Classical music is playing unobtrusively in the
background.

90ANGLE ON O'BRIEN90

As he stands before the assembly and clears his throat.

O'BRIEN
We're gathered here to pay our respects to
one of the finest men I've ever known. He
was honest, hard-working and honorable and
I'm going to miss him. He was a dependable
co-worker and a damn fine kayaking partner.
He was called Odo, but I also called him
friend. And I'm proud to be able to say that
today before all of you gathered here.
(a beat)
Now, I've tried all day to come up with
words, but all I could think of is that...
what's so terrible about this accident isn't just
that I lost a good friend, but the universe lost
an incredible person. And I'm not talking
about him being a shapeshifter, but that there
was no one like him. And there never will be
again.

91C.U. ON TRANSPORTER (OPTICAL)91

A TRANSPORTER BEAM sparkles in front O'Brien. Odo and "Smiley"
materialize in front of the startled assembly.

92ANGLE ON ODO92

As he looks about. Seeing O'Brien, he sighs with relief.

ODO
Chief?
(O'Brien nods, stunned)
Then I am... home.

93WIDE ANGLE OF GROUP93

Happy confusion reigns among the mourners as O'Brien claps Odo on the upper
arms, then is startled to find himself face-to-face with a bewildered "Smiley". The
command crew swarm Odo with greetings of joy.

94EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)94

As before.

95INT. ODO'S QUARTERS95

Odo is replacing the sundial atop his cabinet. His door CHIME sounds.

ODO
Enter.

96ANGLE ON DOORWAY96

Kira walks in, holding a computer recording rod. She looks around the room, then
smiles at Odo.

96AREVERSE ANGLE96A

ODO
Good morning, Major.

KIRA
Good morning, Odo. I just thought you'd
want to know Ambassador Troi just beamed
aboard the Triton. She thought she could
still make that conference on Klaestron.

She steps into room. Odo watches her warily

ODO
Was that all, Major?

96BSLOW ZOOM-IN ANGLE ON KIRA/ODO96B

KIRA
(shakes her head, explains)
Julian found the same cellular anomaly in
"Smiley" that we found in your counterparts
remains. Now that we know, he says we
won't mistake someone else for dead.
(apologetic)
Odo... I--

ODO
(interrupting)
Major, Captain Sisko and Doctor Bashir
already apologized to me. It wasn't your
fault that you assumed I'd been killed.

KIRA
(nods, changes subject)
Well, "Smiley" asked Julian to surgically
alter his face, so there won't be any more
confusion. Bajor Eight needs a senior
technician. I put in a word for him.

Odo nods. Kira hands him the computer recording rod.

ODO
What is this?

KIRA
Your personal logs. With all the excitement
last night, I couldn't give them back.
(apologetically)
I didn't have the time to read them like you
asked--

ODO
(quickly interrupts)
That's alright, Major. I... appreciate your
handling my affairs during my absence.

Kira nods, looks around, turns back, hesitates. Odo asks--

Was there something else, Major?

98C.U. ON ODO'S FACE 98

As Kira nods, then surprisingly hugs Odo, tightly.

KIRA
(against him)
I missed you, Odo. I'm glad you're still here.

Sniffing away embarrassed tears, Kira releases him and exits. Odo is dazed. Close
on his expression, then--

FADE OUT.
